O Labour, #Labour Where where has all the #Vision Gone??

” Labour needs to start believing again in its ability to deliver its own vision, throw away the focus group opportunism and sing its own song in the face of the dreadful media consensus on the economy.”

Angela Eagle’s recent pitch for the Deputy Leadership took the demise of the Labour Party to a new low.. reminding me of the same dearth of any polictical meaning we have seen in the regular contests in Scotland leading to failed leader after failed leader. Not a mention of what our party is FOR. Why should anyone vote Labour? Whatever his difficulties at least Ed Miliband tried to define this. His idea of stealing the mantel of One Nation from the 1950s Tories was brilliant … until he simply forgot about it during the entire campaign… It highlighted how divisive the rampant free market capitalism of the “Conservatives”. but by forgetting about it he simply enabled the trillionaire owned gutter press to define Labour as the divisive party. He also forgot to defend Labour’s record that we actually took the country out of recession after which the Tory Coalition put it back there on purpose and blamed Labour!  He never stated we were in fact the party of Business for instance by completely rescuing the car industry.

The SNP succeed in no small part because their Nationalism has effectively created a One Nation Scotland. They are comfortable with Business AND the Unions. Meanwhile the demise of Jim Murphy and his undignified and furious descent into lambasting Len Mccluskey – leader of Unite – has in turn highlighted the failure of Labour to unite itself into any ONE VISION.

At the Fife meeting of the Labour Party in early June I shall attempt to raise these issues once again as to why ANYONE should vote for let alone join a party that is so far away from the visionary achievements of the Attlee government that created the National Health Service, the Welfare State and council Housing during a period of MASSIVE NATIONAL DEBT – all of which have been systematically dismantled by sucessive Tory governments. I shall atttempt to argue – as I did on the Great Debate BBC Scotland radio last week with Gordon Brewer – my fellow campaigner in the late seventies and early eighties for Social Justice against Labour cutbacks among other issues…

Unless Labour becomes again the great party of Social Justice THEN labour is finished. This vision goes far beyond the narrow definitions of  New and Old Labour. Neither privatised Labour nor Corporate Labour hold any attraction anymore for Scots. They are much more attracted to a party that appears to believe in itself and unashamedly and publically rejects austerity (even while implementing it in practice through its rates freeze!)

===

Labour needs to demonstrate that Social Justice spans asylum seekers, homeless rejects, small medium and large businesses, low paid and zero contract slave labour, the environment and much else… Labour needs to start believing again in its ability to deliver its own vision, throw away the focus group opportunism and sing its own song in the face of the dreadful media consensus on the economy.

===

Frankly Labour needs to get it balls back or it is finished (and I am of course not talking about the defeated shadow chancellor!) Unless and until Labour rediscovers it’s social vision and reason for existence we have no future either in the UK as a whole or in Scotland

===

Meanwhile Labour in Scotland is finished unless we become independent of the UK party. This does not stop us allying and forming future governments of the UK. But that is not going to happen until Labour party members demand we are the party of Social Justice and define not just what this means but how it can be achieved.

As great nephew of Clem Attlee and holding in high esteem my political hero Nye Bevan I reassert the need to transcend the idea that we JUST have to organise things differently.

971955_470099453066520_788993200_n

We do have to organise things differently… and avoid the stalinist methods of both New AND Old Labour and treat each other and our public with respect… BUT we also have to know and be confident of the knowledge as to why we exist and how we can fight for and achieve a genuine change in society. The original biblical concept of Righteousness was not only to do with individual conduct but the well established concept of being Socially Just – whether this was from the old testament prophets, or indeed the Gospels Jesus.

===

Instead of prattling about “aspiration” as if this just meant scrabbling to get above other people – rather than a broad and meaningful way of life – Labour must revisit its roots and relate the values of “The Just Society” to the realities of today and we must explain how we will achieve this. And it will not be by running councils like stalinist bureaucracies and then having the illusion anyone will want us back in power..

Our challenge in Scotland is to replace the SNP as the party people KNOW are trying to unify them in decency. The challenge against the Tories and UKIP is just the same in the English heartlands. Please wake up Labour as to why you ever existed and why you need to continue not just to exist but to blaze a trail

Confront the idocy of the rapacious trillionaire’s gutter press. Get your balls back before they are premanently removed!!!
